What role does consciousness
play in health and healing?
Although great strides have been made in the study of complementary and alternative medicine, our health care system remains primarily disease-centered rather than focused on whole-person healing. Through original research projects exploring the role of consciousness and healing, invitational meetings bringing together stakeholders and wisdom keepers from a variety of healthcare settings and healing traditions, and development of research-based educational curricula for healthcare providers and the general public, this program area is focused on advancing scientific research on the role of consciousness in healing, and supporting the emergence of a new model of health care that allows for the inner wisdom of both patients and health care providers to be combined with scientific and technological advances for the promotion of health and well-being.
A series of meetings exploring strategies for integration of consciousness into healing and healthcare.
We engaged in a study of barriers to the integration of mind-body medicine into healthcare, as well as an exploration of strategies used by leading healthcare professionals who are successfully integrating more consciousness-based approaches into medical education settings.

This project culminated in an innovative three DVD self-paced learning program featuring scientists, healers and healing professionals who are exploring the frontiers of consciousness and healing by addressing the widespread practice of distant healing.

In 1993 IONS published Spontaneous Remission: An Annotated Bibliography. The online project includes additional data for the online copy of the Remission Database.
Science and Spiritual Healing III: Bridging Worlds and Filling Gaps was held in Kona, Hawaii on November 29 - December 3, 2001. This was the third in a series of conferences examining scientific research on spiritual healing practices and related areas. The first conference was held at Harvard in 1997 and the second at Wake Forest University in 2000
