A
few years ago, a series of books by Dr. Masaru
Emoto brought to the public's attention the
idea that thoughts could influence the formation of
water crystals, causing them to look beautiful or deformed.
This effect was illustrated in a scene from the movie
What the Bleep Do We Know!? and helped turn
Dr. Emoto into a worldwide celebrity. Many skeptics
were angered by the surge of interest in this effect,
insisting that any claim that mind influences matter
was nonsense.
Contrary to the opinions of uninformed skeptics, however,
there is actually plenty of published evidence suggesting
that mind influences matter, including water. For example,
the effects of intentionally "treated" water
versus untreated control water has been studied on the
germination and growth of plants, including barley,
wheat, rye, beans, cress, radishes, and lettuce. Other
properties of water that have been investigated include
rates of cooling, molecular bonding, surface tension,
and pH level. But water crystallization had not yet
been studied, so the skeptics' torment persisted.
In
2005, Dr. Emoto visited the IONS campus and gave a presentation
of his data. IONS senior scientist Dean Radin asked
him if he'd be interested in conducting a double-blind
test of his claims, and Dr. Emoto agreed. The results
turned out to support the claims, and the two men copublished
a report
in the journal Explore. In 2007, a second experiment
was conducted, this time under triple-blind conditions,
and again the results showed that thoughts had an impact
on the formation of water crystals. That study
was published in late 2008 in the Journal of Scientific
Exploration.
While the results of both tests support Dr. Emoto's
claims, the observed effects were very small and could
only be "detected" with the use of statistics.
Even so, the essence of his underlying hypothesis appears
to hold up under tightly controlled conditions and,
more importantly, are consistent with the outcomes of
many previous studies.
The

Consciousness and Healing
Evidence Adds Up to a Health Care Revolution
By Vesela Simic
As integrative medicine finds a place on the national
health care stage, science has acquired tools
to better measure the effectiveness of transformative
practices. A close look at three such studies
suggests a bright future for alternative and complementary
therapies.
Extended Human Capacities
The Power of Premonition
By Larry Dossey
"Many critics dismiss premonitions as New
Age mumbo jumbo," writes Dossey, "yet
elegant studies by respected consciousness researchers
compellingly suggest that we really can peer into
the future." And that's important, he believes,
because our survival may depend on cultivating
that ability.
Emerging Worldviews
Mythic Visions for Uncertain Times
By Michael Meade
When the world starts to feel unstable, people
tend to cling to the known and absolute. Renowned
mythologist-storyteller Michael Meade reminds
us that the threads of any new story will be woven
not by fear but by imagination and the ancient
wisdom that connects "the solid ground of
the earth and the unseen realm that sustains it."
Transformation
Evolving Consciousness
By Kaisa Puhakka
Beyond positions, beyond beliefs, lies a place
where the mind can truly open to the possibilities
of any given moment. Is such receptivity possible
in a world beset by polarity and conflict? It
is, says this Zen psychologist, and that potential
is available to anyone.

"Love
Study" Follow-Up
In the last issue of iShift we alerted you
to a five-part All Things Considered series
on NPR that is reporting on the relationship between
prayer and healing and that was about to feature a
study
carried out by IONS researchers. That program did
air on May 21, and the transcript and audio are available
here.
The interviewer, NPR correspondent Barbara Bradley
Hagerty, had long been interested in the topic and
following her own noetic experience some years ago
was drawn to the work of IONS. (She also has written
the newly released book, Fingerprints
of God ,
which features some of our research.)
Such mainstream coverage is the latest evidence that
our explorations into consciousness are having an
impact. As a nonprofit, we rely on the support of
individual contributors, so if you agree that our
research is making a difference and want to see more
of it, please support
us.
IONS
Fellow Van Jones Recognized by Time Magazine
Also in the mainstream is IONS Fellow and Green for
All cofounder Van Jones. Van was recently named special
adviser on green jobs for the White House Council
on Environmental Quality, and selected as one of Time
Magazine's "100 Most Influential People." Check out
Van's
"Time 100" profile, written by Leonardo DiCaprio.
Van was also interviewed on May 29 on the PBS show
Now with David Brancaccio. The program was
titled "Green
Jobs: Hope or Hype?". IONS has supported Van Jones
and his work for many years, and we are gratified
and hopeful to see our colleagues making a positive
difference in the world.

Amateur jazz and rescued cats, global citizenship and
world peace, healing imagery and human consciousness,
all mixed together to inform the complex life of Marilyn
R. Saunders, a longtime member of IONS and former IONS
Community Group leader in Washington, DC. As a world
citizen, Marilyn traveled extensively. She was a Peace
Corps volunteer in Somalia and later taught at the University
of Guyana in South America. She belonged to several
world peace organizations, including Global Citizen
Journey, which strives to bridge cultural differences
at the grassroots level, and she was active in the World
Future Society.
Professionally Marilyn worked for 25 years as a licensed
clinical professional counselor, a nationally certified
counselor, and an advanced clinician in Imago Relationship
Therapy. She coauthored the book Using Imagery in
Therapy: A Path to Nurturance, Empowerment, and Reconciliation
and made numerous presentations at national and international
conferences and gatherings.
Marilyn retired to Whidbey Island near Seattle in 2004.
She remained active in many organizations including
the Unitarian Universalist Church, the Lorian Association,
and a Wednesday morning marimba group. Ahmed Amin, the
son of her heart whom she had taught in Somalia and
