The Death of Religion and the Rebirth of Spirit

The Death of Religion and the Rebirth of Spirit

A Return to the Intelligence of the Heart

by Joseph Chilton Pearce, MA

  • Reviewed by The Editors on June 1, 2007

Recently influenced by the research of HeartMath and building on his considerable work in the field of child development, this eminent iconoclast, mystic, and best-selling author persuasively asserts that religion and materialist science are at the roots of human violence. He traces what he might describe as “the original trauma” to the negative imprinting of adult brains onto infants during the bonding process. The source of this negative imprinting, Pearce argues, is an instinctually primitive mind-set conditioned by the narrow dogma of religious and materialist values. Drawing on history, philosophy, and a wide range of recent research from such diverse fields as biology, neuroscience, and cultural anthropology, he believes that the only way out is to put the wisdom of the heart at the center of our experience.
