Join us for a potluck dinner followed with a presentation by internationally known life story expert, Robert Atkinson, who for 25 years has been building community by encouraging people of all ages and backgrounds to share their life stories through the Life Story Commons at the University of Southern Maine. His latest book describes life's greatest adventure: the journey of the soul - discovering who we really are and why we are deeply connected to all others. The book lays out, step by step, a process of soul-making, or living our lives consciously so we can experience the universal motifs, archetypes, and timeless patterns that we all share.
About our Speaker
Robert Atkinson, PhD, is the author of eight books, professor of human development and religious studies, and director of the Life Story Commons at the University of Southern Maine. He is a pioneer in the development of the life story interview methodology and among the first to apply Joseph Campbell’s classic work on the mythological journey of the hero to contemporary personal mythmaking. His two books in these areas have been translated into Japanese, Italian, and Romanian and are widely used in various personal growth and life review settings. His PhD is from the University of Pennsylvania in cross-cultural human development. He has an MA from SUNY, Cooperstown in American Folk Culture, and another from the University of New Hampshire in counseling, with a BA in philosophy and American Studies from Southampton College of Long Island University. Between his two master's degrees, he had a series of transformative experiences that resulted in his memoir of that period, Remembering 1969: Searching For the Eternal in Changing Times (2008). His other books include: The Beat of My Drum: An Autobiography, with Babatunde Olatunji (2005); The Life Story Interview (1998); and, The Gift of Stories: Practical and Spiritual Applications of Autobiography, Life Stories, and Personal Mythmaking (1995). www.RobertAtkinson.net
About the Life Story Commons
The Life Story Commons was established in 1988 (as the Center for the Study of Lives) at USM to celebrate individual lives and strengthen community bonds by bringing people of all generations and backgrounds together to share life stories. It's activities have included public forums, stage readings of life stories, and the promotion of intergenerational and intercultural communication through the exchange of personal stories.
The Commons is founded upon the belief that every person has an important story to tell about the life they have lived. The sharing of these life stories helps us to recognize that we are all members of the human family.
