One of our favorite bumper stickers: "Don't believe everything you think."

The Institute of Noetic Sciences recognizes that there are two truth systems in consciousness, two ways of acquiring information – the inner/subjective/intuitive (the noetic) and the outer/objective/intellectual (the sciences). Much of the world has focused on the latter in its educational and cultural development and ignored the former. A true experiencing of our natural wholeness as human beings requires that we integrate both the inner and the outer while recognizing the limitations of a duality-based, either/or point of view and the inclusivity of a nonduality-based, both/and point of view. As explained by IONS founder and Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell, “the Newtonian idea of separate, independent, discreet things in the universe wasn’t a fully accurate description. What was needed was a new story of who we are and what we are capable of becoming.” That is where consciousness comes in, and the value of direct experiencing.

Beyond our beliefs, beyond our conditioning, beyond the rational/intellectual, there is a source of wisdom that connects us to something larger, that can lead us to a new and expanded view of our reality in which the fundamental interconnectedness of all life becomes more visible. To experience that wisdom, we need to find a way out of the box of our “normal” operating consciousness—our normal thinking self. Numerous research studies are finding that contemplative practices such as meditation affect the actual structures of our brains and can trigger changes in one’s behavior and perspective. Accessing new states of consciousness and awareness can also be achieved through the simple acts of quieting the mind, listening, and being present. By utilizing these and other similar practices, we will begin to sense a change in our consciousness that will increase access to new sources of insight and transform our experiencing of ourselves and the world around us.

What do you think?

I like the metaphor of the alcoholic: s/he may have "quit" drinking many times in life; the challenge is how not to start drinking again? The singularly most successful approach for that is AA, which is a spiritual program *without the dogma of religion.* If we use that metaphor to address this question regarding how we get out of the box of rational thinking, well, the answer is, "something other than rational thinking." Meditation is clearly a solid alternative to ratinonal (or even irrational!) thinking: we are to enter the Silence and stop the chatter. It's my understanding, from the teacher whose work I am currently studying, that meditation is the key that is is common to all major religions and spiritual belief systems for entering "the Great Silence", and that Silence is where we are able to see and hear different levels of spirit...and perhaps communicate directly with S/spirit, ourselves.

The larger question would be, how do we keep from slipping back into that box once again? That "box" is like a coffin, and the slope of that 6 foot grave are pretty steep!

It takes time and effort to develop a meditation practice...and the discipline to go beyond "passive meditation" to "active meditation" so that we can be in Spirit and flesh at the same time. That requires giving up some of our business (busy-ness.) A person has to "want" something other than pursuits of the physical world, the flesh, to make the decision to make time to pursue the spiritual. What I'm saying is that the first step has to be Choice; you have to want something different and want to see the spiritual world before you can make time to reach out to it. Once we've made that choice, we start with "going into the Silence." It's not the final destination; it's just a bridge to the world of spirit, where more work is yet to be done, but first we must open to Spirit. That's my understanding for now. *Start* with choice to attain a greater awareness of Spirit, and the next step is some kind of meditation practice.

We think using many labels--necessary and useful when done with care. Our labels are like bags or boxes into which we neatly put our experiences, our reactions, our environment, and our fellow humans. But often our labeled boxes mislead us because the specific people in time and space--what they actually do, value, and represent--these people may not fit the label very well at all, or the generalizations we have arrayed in our minds under our labels.

So, our mental boxes can box us in psychologically. When our quick firm categories lack thoughtfulness, they act as blinders--then it's as if the boxes are not just in our minds but around our heads!

2 people are staring at each other through a building window. One is inside and the other outside.

The first person - outside - is completely alone, gently smiling, silent, peaceful, calm and aware.

The second person - inside - is alone, but surrounded by noisy, busy people working around him. His mind is running like a gerbel on a treadmill. He is stressed, frustrated and feels trapped.

They stare at each other. The person inside taps his foot to the radio in the background and wonders what the person outside is thinking as he stands there motionless. He is distracted by this thought and the presence of this mysterious person staring back at him.

There are cars, trucks, buses and people all around. It is big city downtown on a busy summer afternoon. The city is bustling all around, yet this person stands silent, motionless and calm amid all the rush and confusion. He is like a pillar of peace in a hurricane.

Soon the car noises drift away, the radio silences, the chatter of busy people fades away. The 2 people, staring at each other, now see, hear and experience only each other. The world around them both has disappeared.

Now the space between disappears, they can hear each other breathing. the person inside, awestruck and utterly lost in this enigmatic presence, opens his mouth to ask the question that his mind cannot grasp. "Who are you?" He asks the person outside.

The man outside directs his attention to the man inside. His attention sends mystical waves of powerful, yet subtle, soothing energy through the entire being of the man inside. "Who am I?" The man outside inquires. "I am you".

This is well said. I need to add: If we all make effort to change our consumers lifestyle to more natural one--start living in the tune with the Nature, not against it, who ever can to grow their own organic food and fruits, plant some trees, specifically cedars to purify our air,use reverse osmosis filters for our water, we can avert big disaster which is looming over us.

I have developed a view of human consciousness - with pictures (possibly the first visual advance in depicting consciousness in 300+ years) which illustrates many of the points raisedabove.

The more exciting thing is that this was developed in tandem with a practical online tool which anyone (who uses English language) to "get out of their box".

I think the time is upon us where we (humanity) need to do something other than just talk about the situation and it is for the few to encourage the many that a shift is the way to go.

CyberSayer® is my contribution to encouraging the main-road travellers to take a detour into conscious, empowered awareness.

I would love to suggest you visit empoweryourconsciousness dot com to see the my visual view of the energy field that is human consciousness but I suspect that may be contrary to IONS non-promotional guidelines, so I won't.

On the other hand it may help someone get out of their box better (humour intended).

Excellent article, and yes, I agree that it is time to get out of our box. I believe that each and everyone's "box" is more or less based on our habitual thinking which then creates who we are today. It is widely accepted that thought creates our reality, however, most of us believe that there is really nothing we can do to escape these thoughts, even that these thoughts are part of a genetic blueprint! For me it all comes down to recognition and choices. When I wake up with some chatter on my mind, I first have to recognize that it is my mind chattering without prompting, and then I can make a choice about these thoughts! Can I fill my mind with something else, something more meaningful? What about stillness? And out of stillness, if I am really willing to listen, comes the voice of the soul, or a feeling of something good, and then I know that I am on the right path, and that I can really change the way I am thinking.
After all, who I am is first and foremost determined by what I believe, and my beliefs are made up of thoughts. If I can change my thoughts, I can change my beliefs, I can change who I am. At present I am reading Dr. Wayne W. Dyer's book "Excuses Bygone". On page 10 of his book he mentions the work of Richard Brodie. In his book "Virus of the Mind", a virus of the mind is a thought, belief or attitude in your mind that can spread to and from other people's minds. Brodie uses the word 'virus' to describe what happens in the mind through mimicking and imitating. Almost like any other contagious virus! We spread our thoughts with passion, because we do like to know that we are not the only ones "in the box". I have given that a lot of thought, and yes, I have to agree that the accumulation of other peoples' thoughts will subtly influence our behavior. We only have to watch and listen to the news every night, and a topic repeated over and over will slowly creep into our thought pattern and before we know it, it will be our own! Yes, it does sound simplified, but maybe we can start be really being aware of our thoughts, then asking the question if we really like what's swirling around in our heads, and then making a choice about what kind of thoughts would really be beneficial not only to our growth, but to the growth of mankind. Remember, "from little things big things grow". Sending you all a big smile - Dagmar

Hi Hallie, Interesting question and i loved Lawrence Carson's question: What is the box we are trying to get out of. Now that is going to keep a lotta folks, including me, busy for a long, long time. But back to Hallie's thinking. I would like to use the word, 'connection' over 'linking'. I feel like there is 'connection' and maybe most of us don't sit still long enough to feel it. One of my gripes about Science is that few people ever seem to say: Scientific informationn is primarily 'human perception', i.e., some human's rendition of what is discovered and what it means. That is not to say that science is not useful or important, look how far our explorations have taken us. But, from my personal experience, connection does exist. It occurs for me randomly and unexpectedly most of the time. I am simply in a 'place' where it happens, and it feels very nice. Occasionally, other times, I can pause in space almost and simply reach for it and it is there. In my view, language can help us get thru this maze and my word, is, CONNECTION, CONNECTION, CONNEDTION! Hope this makes sense, we are talking or trying to talk about such unfamiliar territory and, for me, at least, it takes a lot more thinking time than I have to offer just now. But hope this comment 'connects' with people, and thanx for all U'all's input, helps me think and connect..

Getting out of the box is a personal choice and can only happen when a person knows there is an outside/inside relationship. This can be taken further to the point realizing one can see both an in and out of the box view, meaning one must be standing off in the distance - like the rest of the world - in a trance of forgetfulness.
The path I have chosen in my life is one of service and ceremony and it has been my experience that unless a person has asked to see this over view, or experience that which is just presently out of reach of their understanding (supra-consciousness); the impact can be devastating to the fabric of their being. This being said I defer to the path of experience and validation. Through certain ceremonies and acts of service the veil drops and people can easily be shown the world they now call paranormal and see the very fabric of Creation. Their previous notions of existence and Creation will fall fast and it is essential to provide some perspective of the awakened understanding.
There is a reason they called it Pandora's Box and at the same time I believe it to be a form of genetic fail safe in lieu of our collective amnesia. Many people around the world are beginning to remember that - humanity is a individual species not a species of individuals. I try to listen for "the calling" to service remembering - journeying into to special realms or spirit worlds is easy - The challenge comes when you walk the day to day life knowing what you do and keeping it to yourself until asked.

There is no box - and the observer is the illusion, we all presently call consciousness. Remeber - each step is a heart beat and every breath a prayer. - Eamonn

Science < [ Latin = sciere … definition - to know.] It says nothing about “Reductionist Measurement Methodologies” being better than “The Synergy of Meanings.”

What I find very, very unusual is that although I have heard a thousand time (as the initiating authors so aptly repeated) "we need to find a way out of the box of our “normal” operating consciousness"
What I find even more unusual … in fact mega meta unusual is that with hundreds of books I have read, of hundreds of web site libraries, blogs, etc. that I have visited … never once have I read the following question. “What is [the box that we are fixated in] … built of?”

If questions are the engines and curiosity the propulsion energy then it seems to me that that single question, along with the entourage of obvious relating questions just might realign our mind’s attention beam into the unknown … the place where all new is discovered.

Here are just a few tag along questions that still remain hidden for most:
    • What is energy?
    • Do all quanta energy manifestations (standing waves, etc.) possess states of awareness?
    • Are there in fact no nouns in the universe because every standing waveform manifestation is a verb… “thinging along” within this living sea of awareness … a coherent and harmonically aligned cosmic choir?
    • What is the out of the box definitional criteria for identifying “life?”
    • Are belief systems living?
    • Who is the master… Who is the host … beliefs or humanity?
    • How does the “Meta Operating System” of the mind of man … transform energy sensory input (Visual, auditory, kinesthetic, gustatory, olfactory, etc.) into such a wide array and altitudinal range of emotions?
    • What is the source difference between emotions and feelings?
    • Since “Common Sense” is what got us to where we are … and to where we have not yet arrived … when we are going to try something else … “Uncommon Sense?”

That’s it for now. Now that my wife and I have left the two years with my living at the bottom of the Grand Canyon with the Havasupai Tribe and are back in Boise … GREETINGS with SMILES!

And thank you Marilyn for assuming the navigators post to new directions.

My interpretation of getting out of the box is expanding my Consciousness/Awareness to embrace the ideology that I am a Spiritual being having a Human experience not a Human being having a Spiritual experience. The box is sourced from the Fear frequency and promotes the ideology of Separation, Duality, External stimulation and Limited thinking. Outside of the box, you get to experience the Love frequency, this frequency promotes the ideology of Oneness, Triality, Internal stimulation and Quantum thinking.

Moving from the inside to the outside was very time consuming. The processs involved disconnecting from all the belief systems that defined who I was and creating new belief systems that defines who I choose to be. In addition, I cleared and balanced my Chakras creating on unified Chakra, balanced my Four Bodies of Consciousness as well as balance my Male and Female energies. Now that I am outside of the box, I am learning to live and be in a totally different way. I assess myself as being in the first grade, so this is an ongoing process for me, but the feeling is indescribable.

IntegralBody, I agree setting the example is an excellent start and you will attract people whose mind is ready for a (noetic) change.
My experience - and as you said yourself - is that it is not enough to light the fire in those who have not reached the breaking point yet.
Even highly intelligent people experienced in communication training are unable to deal with that issue. They find it harder to communicate with their own should them with another person. (from Ben) Again for me the original quote and the lack of recognition of the different perceptual reality expressions that are created by our Noetic Inner/subjective/intuitive Consciousness and our Sciences outer/objective/intellectual Consciousness when not owned and known create for me all of what the two of you are describing…

Tangle is a good word, IntragalBody, for the work, life, need, junk aspects that we are speaking of here. I liked some of the things you said in your first response to Ben and me (HI Ben, we met on the first IONS cruise to Mexico. I was living in Marin, also, at the time.) and will have to give your comments some thought, but that is the way I learn fer sure. So thanx. I'm focusing these days on the practical, on Survival. I think many people in our American culture have forgotten that nice idea -- SURVIVAL -- and a lot of what all of us do goes nowhere near that aim. I find SURVIVAL a very appealing prospect. We, of course, have to untangle the definition of Survival, and therein lies Survival. Best to all

  • Kriste Brushaber Aug 16, 2010

Ben & Jenny: I feel that everyone will discover while “setting the example”, reaching and speaking out, and actively participating on at least a community scale starting with family, friends and colleagues eventually becomes part of the process automatically. I am experiencing this the more I commit. I am amazed at the people I “attract” who either want to help me or want my help in this transition, or just really want to talk about it. It simply can’t be avoided once one has really opened their heart (like our discussion for example)! On a larger scale, my vocation’s purpose and possibilities for the future are bigger and more significant than I could have ever imagined 10 years ago and involve ways to engage others. But it all begins with the personal inner work.

Jenny, I agree the definition of work, and therefore economy itself needs to change. There are millions who are working in obsolete and wasteful industries and governments bailing out those industries to save “jobs” regardless if the product is something we really need or is sustainable. For example, who is buying all the new cars and why, and what happens to the millions of used yet usable cars, and knowing there has been viable technology for excellent electric cars for decades why these cars are not standard for the majority of the population. Or, when you look at the tons of meaningless plastic trinkets that are mass manufactured that have absolutely no functional use and cheaply made furniture that starts falling apart after a few months, but it employed someone…regardless of that worker’s inherent potential to participate in life in a more meaningful way even if it is just making a better, sustainable, more useful product. I guess someone is buying this stuff... so what happens if we start spending our money wisely or participate more in bartering for goods and services?

When one thinks of how a community is sustained in certain cultures, each person has their task/job, yet many not receive a direct paycheck. When and why did these symbiotic relationships become stigmatized? When did every person, couple, or immediate family have to own their own separate house or property with multiple vehicles to sustain economic growth proving their worth to society? Yet how many “successful” people pay outsiders to essentially raise their kids, or basically allow the television and computers to raise them because they do not have time due to their jobs to pay for a bunch of unnecessary stuff? There are so many aspects tangled through this subject (as with all)…

Hi, think I may be a little confused as to who started this conversation, but I especially liked Kriste's first sentence in her comment above. One of the things that is crossing my mind these days and has for the past several years is the general 'cry' about work and 'unemployment'. My God, we are 6 billion or more now on Planet Earth, and I have to wonder if perhaps we need to shift our thinking about work, in general, and ask what "work" really means, it's function, it's purpose, and how we sort it out in the 21st Century. Yes, there are huge differences for/in Third World countries, and everybody needs to eat, to have the means to sustain themselves and their families. But do we, at least in the US and other western countries, really need to full-time employ our entire adult population? I'm not so sure, and, in my view, this daily catawauling, especially in the media, about being 'without' work is not helping us think straight about 'work' or our evolving 'lives and spirits', in general.

This is a very practical aspect of the subject above, but if we can't/don't talk straight in our national conversations, we can't think straight either, or we simply buy into that which 'use to be', or supposedly 'has always been', that is simply no longer true, necessary or useful -- e.g., the folks who shooed the horses. As we move into the 'next' phase of human existence so often spoken of here, we must reach out into everyday and talk honestly and publicly about what is and what is not, raise the clear questions that will open up the subject and enable everyone to think or re-think today's reality, and hopefully act accordingly. Setting an example is important, but reaching out is equally important.

We live in an era where our souls can no longer withstand purposeless pursuit of material gain, wasteful scientific, political, social, religious, medical and monetary values that prove meaningless or destructive when applied to authentic quality of life for all beings, and narcissistic creating/doing/pushing/manipulating things because we “can” regardless if we really should. We are being called to higher, collaborative purpose. Those who are unaware or in denial of this shift will continue to suffer physically, mentally, and spiritually until they either expire or finally break like an addict that “hits bottom” and makes the choice to open their heart and mind to a new way of thinking. For now, that breaking point will vary greatly per individual. As more people shift, the average suffering and breaking point will improve for those remaining.

For now, that breaking point will vary greatly per individual. As more people shift, the average suffering and breaking point will improve for those remaining.

What can those who are aware and inviting in this new consciousness do for others? Become an example. First, evolve our individual lives to a stage of being that glorifies the highest good, truth and beauty each of us can imagine: choice of vocation, food, recreation, relationships, home, community, what we spend our time thinking about, what we spend our emotions caring about...the list goes on. This requires slowing down, simplifying, listening, appreciating, etc...and there are numerous methods to choose from. Now, if you are thinking that this process will take forever- you are right. It is an ongoing practice while in Earthly existence. So what about helping others?

The wonderful thing is, it is precisely that self-evolution process that will raise the vibration of worldly consciousness enabling an exponential number of others to awaken sooner.

And yes, create or join communities and organizations that enlighten and empower others if called to do so. Invite others to join the journey and discover together (although this cannot be forced, they must freely choose). Let others use their unique talents and ideas combined with yours to create something bigger than anyone could imagine or accomplish separately.

Yet know for better or worse, our daily thoughts and actions in what may be perceived as our private lives is influencing the whole, effecting more beings any of us will never meet face to face than those we directly encounter. For example, if we do not consciously make the healthiest food choices for ourselves, family and planet possible, we not only help perpetuate the creation and reproduction of unhealthy choices for all but also become a systematic burden if suffering illness due to those choices. This scenario can be applied to every aspect of life and is more powerful than any “activism”, governing law and wishful thinking combined.

Even if you make only one meaningful change, it is better than not. And now that the Shift is on, once you make that decision it will be easier to make more, especially when you are aware you are never choosing just for yourself.
