Conscious Aging Workshops
Orientation for Facilitators (Audio Recording)
On this page you can listen to an audio recording of an orientation session delivered to IONS Conscious Aging pilot testers who delivered the workshops in 2013, prior to the public launch. Although this recording was structured for the early pilot test, which is now completed, the information shared is of value for those seeking an orientation to the program and/or deciding whether to purchase it or not.
This 26 minute recording provides an overview of the Conscious Aging program and the process and content of the Conscious Aging workshop series. Disregard references made to the handout (you can look at the Conscious Aging Details web page to get the same information) and note that a few of the session titles and their order in the series have changed (correct session titles are listed on the web site). But overall this is a good general introduction to the background and structure of the Conscious Aging program.
For more details on the curriculum, contact Kathleen Erickson-Freeman at Kfreeman@noetic.org.

Comments from facilitators who participated in pilot testing
"Teaching the lessons healed me of the dread I had been carrying regarding my own aging. In the last session, 'Creating a New Vision of Aging,' formulating the intention statement has incredible potential for healing. The intention statement has helped to release my dread of being alone and abandoned at the end of life."
"Already, I use the guide in thinking of how to design consulting projects that I’m invited to do. I find myself sharing both process and content pieces from the guide with colleagues as we explore programs. Also, I’m eager to see if/how IONS follows up with making the guide available for future programs. I would love to use the guide as a basis for programs that I offer formally through organizations such as churches, community groups, retirement centers, and small in-home study groups."
"The Conscious Aging Pilot inspired me to reach out to the senior community to a much greater extent. I teach adults of all ages and we have not had a large number of people in the senior age group. It was clear to me that people of all ages want to understand how to age consciously and graciously. This group included people ranging in age from 33 to 89. They were ALL very interested in the topic, not just the ones who are young seniors."
"The guide was a useful tool which brought together the various themes of conscious aging. It was compact and pithy. Well done!"
"I would love to teach this course. It could be the start of a totally new career path for me."
"I am just starting a graduate program in Gerontology with the intent of teaching about the aging process—this guide will be a key resource. I am also investigating becoming a Personal Historian; again this guide can be the foundation for some great interviewing questions."
"This was a wonderfully opening, enlightening, and empowering experience for all of the participants and for me. Thank you for this opportunity!"
"I want to be able to offer this program to senior education programs in the coming year. My peers are already very interested to learn about this program and are asking how they can get involved?"
"The 'Life Review' session was a powerful tool for helping elders see with hindsight that many of their life experiences that they perceived as painful, difficult, or disastrous provided them with major opportunities to shift their perceptions. Without these challenges, they could have never realized that each “painful” lesson gave them another chance to learn the lessons that they needed to learn the most."
"I witnessed the presence of Spirit with both the small and large group connections. The richness, honesty, humility, and insights from these conversations were incredible. It makes me ponder/wonder on the healing power of connection as we age. Elderly folks that tend to self-isolate are healed by the power of community. Community is the key for good mental, physical, and spiritual health."
"The participants were REALLY glad to hear the subject matter and to have the opportunity to reflect on their experiences. There was a much greater response from people (in terms of being interested in this program) than I expected; we didn’t have enough room to accommodate everyone who wanted to attend, so I am looking for a larger venue for next time."
"The way the program is developed with four key learning principles and the components – Attune / Self Reflection / Small Group Work / Large Group Work – seems brilliant. This program worked extremely well for this group of adults who I would call seekers."
"This course helped me to notice limiting beliefs and decisions I had made long ago and helped me to 'course correct' in my life. Thank you."
"I like that the participants gave input throughout the sessions. It is educational and enlightening to find out the views of others about aging and death."
